This picture is of the port city of Valetta.
This picture was taken in the ancient city of Mdina. It is a medieval walled city that was first fortified by the Phoenicians around 700 B.C. Tradition holds that the shipwrecked St. Paul resided in Mdina during his ministry on the island. We were able to go into the beautiful St. Paul's cathedral. It was beautiful and there was an organist playing which really added to the ambiance.
This is the view from the top of the wall that surrounds Mdina. It is the highest point on the island.

This is one of my favorite pictures of us from the whole trip. 
This was our first view of Malta from the cruise ship.
Malta is essentially a fortress. Throughout history, Malta's location has given it great strategic importance. It was heavily bombed during WWII. In the first six months of 1942, there was only one 24-hour period without air raids. It was always held by the allied countries. Winston Churchill called the island the "unsinkable aircraft carrier."
